Airport and Aviation Services Announced Post COVID Strategies - Plans for a Sustainable Recovery

Travel and the aviation industry are hardly hit by the awake of COVID-19 pandemic. With the revenue losses which have been occurred with the travel restrictions and closing borders, airport operators around the world, stringent measures are taken to control cost, optimize liquidity while doing their best to facilitate cargo and repatriation flights. 


Along with the world aviation downfall due to the spread of COVID-19 Pandemic, International Air Transport Association (IATA) has estimated loss of USD 314 billion revenue in the global aviation industry and Airports Council International (ACI) has predicted that two-fifth of air passenger traffic to be lost amidst COVID-19 pandemic.


COVID-19 had a significant adverse impact on passenger traffic at BIA during the first and second quarters due to reduced flight numbers caused by the suspension of air services by regulatory authorities in Sri Lanka and around the world. 


As the airport operator, we have identified strategic policy changes to be adapted for the post COVID recovery of the organization. To enlighten the managerial staff of the company and as an initial step to align the human capital of the organization for the post-COVID recovery strategy, Major. General (Rtd.) G. A. Chandrasiri, Chairman AASL has conducted a motivational session on 18th May 2020 at the Silk Route Arrival Lounge for the Airport Managers, Terminal Superintendents, and the Terminal Supervisors. The participants were encouraged to give innovative ideas and strategies to implement. To overcome this unique challenge, the Chairman requests all the participants to stay focused on the responsibilities and work with team spirit. He mentioned that “Your commitment makes all the difference and this will be a beginning of a new era”. Further, he mentioned that it is in times of crisis the heroes are born and he motivated everyone to contribute their best to AASL to shine at this difficult hour. This is the moment for extra effort and forgoing the extra mile.
