Diploma Awards 2020 at CATC

The 7th Batch of students who successfully completed the “Diploma in Aviation Studies” Programme at the Civil Aviation Training Centre (CATC) Sri Lanka, were awarded their diploma at a glittering ceremony held at the CATC Auditorium on Monday the 10th February 2020. Chairman AASL, Major General (Rtd.) G. A. Chandrasiri RWP USP VSV ndc psc, was the Chief Guest at the occasion. Director AASL Mr Shehan Sumanasekara, several heads of divisions, unit managers and senior officers of AASL, resource personnel of the Diploma programme and the parents of the diploma recipients were present.


This programme commenced in 2011 to cater to the human resource needs at middle management and supervisory levels in the general trades of the aviation industry. In addition to providing a thorough overall knowledge on the industry the participants are also taught the fundamentals of operations management, planning and scheduling skills, analytical techniques and a global citizen’s outlook so that they can take up employment even overseas.


In his ceremonial oration, Chairman AASL, Major General Chandrasiri spoke about the challenges faced by the aviation industry and those which continue to arise. These included weather and other natural happenings, economic challenges and challenges due to rapid advancement of technology as well as man-made challenges such as security threats. He requested the diploma recipients to contribute well to the industry reminding them that this reward is the sweet fruit of their hard work. (click here to read the full text of the oration). At the conclusion of the oration, the chairman mentioned about the intention of the company to absorb the 3 top performers of the programme to the company’s services.


Later, Chairman AASL, Major General Chandrasiri awarded the diploma by garlanding each successful student with the diploma pendent and by awarding the certificate.


Three merit awards were also made to top performers of the programme. The Chairman’s gold medal was awarded to Ms. Shyanika Dasanayake who topped the batch and the T R N Perera memorial silver medal was awarded to the batch second, Mr. M Juffaly. Both medals were given away by Chairman, Major General Chandrasiri. The Head’s bronze medal for the student top scoring in the subject ‘Analytical Techniques’ was also won by the batch second Mr. Juffaly and was given away by the Head of Electronics and Air Navigation Engineering AASL, Eng. Wipula Wimalshanthi.


This Diploma is the only diploma programme in the field of aviation awarded by a state owned institution. CATC Sri Lanka is a division of AASL and is a member of the ICAO TRAINAIR PLUS programme. 


Applications for the enrolment of the 8th batch are presently being entertained.
