BIA TERMINAL-2 CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

A New Passenger Terminal Under Construction in Sri Lanka.

Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) Terminal 2 Development Project Launched

New Terminal Will Handle additional 9 mn passengers per annum.

Sri Lanka's strategic geographical location, at a point where trade routes cross each other from the West to the East and vice versa, has been a consistent pattern from ancient times. The historic Silk Route, connecting the East with the West, had crossed Sri Lanka. As a result, there would have been plenty of transshipments routed via Sri Lanka even then. Accordingly, Sri Lanka’s geographical location in the Indian Ocean right in the center of aviation flight paths connecting the East and the West is ideally suited for the aviation industry. Therefore, developing Colombo as a destination for aviation and developing Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) had been a dire need for the country's socio-economic development.

Accordingly, by identifying the long-term delays and prioritizing the implementation of the BIA Terminal 2 construction project the groundbreaking ceremony of the new Terminal-2 of Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) was ceremonially launched on 18th November 2020. Bandaranaike International Airport handled 62,195 international flight movements and 9.9 mn passenger movements in 2019. Despite the challenges of COVID-19 pandemic, BIA handled 2,354,867 passenger movements, 20,437 aircraft movements and by playing a key role in supporting the needs of the cargo industry, BIA handled 149,985 MT of cargo during 2020.

Upgrading the passenger handling capacity has been a major requirement at BIA to facilitate international airlines and passengers. Once completed, the new terminal will be able to handle 9 mn passengers per annum and it will increase the total passenger handling capacity at BIA up to 15 mn passengers per annum. And this new terminal construction will uplift the international standards of BIA as a world-class airport reflecting the unique and dynamic Sri Lankan culture. Pursuing the vision of be a Friendliest Aviation Partner in Global Connectivity towards a Sustainable Economy, Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited is geared up to develop the required infrastructure of the main gateway and the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) will be one of the fascinating airport destinations in the region soon.

The commencement of BIA Terminal 2 is a giant step towards becoming an aviation hub in the region. The project consists of the construction of a new multi-level terminal building where arrivals and departures are separated vertically. The BIA Terminal 2 will be constructed under the concept of smart airports and the successful completion of this project will enable to create a pleasant travel experience for both local and international travelers. The added facilities such as multi-storied car park, new airport lounges, gate lounges, connected multi-mode transport services, etc. would create much more passenger convenience and experience. The project consists of PACKAGE A and PACKAGE B and the PACKAGE A comprises the construction of the passenger terminal building & associated works with a total value of USD 578 Mn. PACKAGE B consists of the construction of the remote apron & taxiways with the total value of USD 34 Mn.

Further, the total floor area in the new terminal will be 185,900 m2 and along with the new terminal, the total floor area will be increased up to 275,900 m2. The passenger check-in counters will be increased up to 149 with the addition of 96 new counters. In addition to that, 32 new departure passport control counters, 56 new passport arrival counters, 16 contact gates, 10 bus gates, 6 new airline lounges, 7 new baggage claim carousel, 7 baggage make up a carousel, and 23 new aircraft parking bases will be added to the new terminal.

Japan Airport Consultants, Inc. and Nippon Koei Co., Ltd. – (JAC/NK) are the consultants of the project and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funding partner. TAISEI Corporation, Japan is the Contractor for this project. Successful completion of this project will enable airport operations to be carried out in a more passenger-friendly manner. Further, the new terminal will enable to create a pleasant travel experience for both local and international travelers and the added facilities such as multi-storied car park, new airport lounges, gate lounges, connected multi-mode transport services, etc. would create much more passenger convenience and experience.

BIA Terminal-2 Contributes to Environmental Sustainability

BIA Terminal 2- Achieved the LEED Accreditation

BIA Terminal 2 is designed to get the LEED accreditation (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and the present design has all the features to consider for the silver status going beyond the expectation as it was originally expected to receive Bronze certification. With the construction process and usage of specified material for the construction combined with the overall design, we expect to get the Gold certification under the LEED accreditation for Terminal 2 by the completion of the Project. The project is being constructed preserving 30% energy and 40% water consumption.
