CONSTRUCTION OF NEW TERMINAL BUILDING, ASSOCIATED NEW PIER BUILDINGS AND PASSENGER BOARDING BRIDGES (PBB) AT BANDARANAIKE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (VCBI)

 

1.        Introduction

 

1.1      The purpose of this AIC is to inform all aircraft operators about the construction of the new terminal building (T2) ,associated new pier buildings and Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBB) at Bandaranaike International Airport under the BIA Development Project Phase II Stage 2.

 

1.2      The project will address issues such as congestion and passenger discomfort at the airport. Accordingly the new terminal is expected to handle nine million passengers annually, taking the airport’s passenger handling capacity to fifteen million passengers annually.

 

1.3      The project will involve the construction of a new multi-level terminal building with a floor area of approximately 180,000 square meters, two new piers,16 PBBs and a connecting concourse link to the existing terminal (T1). In terminal 2 (T2) the arrival and departure terminal areas will be separated vertically.

2.                          Scope of the BIA Development Project Phase II Stage 2    

2.1.     New passenger terminal building (T2) including new pier (Pier 2) with 8 PBBs connecting concourse link to the existing terminal building (T1)

 

2.2.     New pier (Pier 3) with 8 PBBs connecting concourse link to the new passenger terminal building (T2)

 

2.3.     Multi storey car park

 

2.4.     Elevated roadway

 

2.5.     Public utilities and solid waste disposal system.

4.    Date of Completion

4.1.     Construction activities have already been commenced and expected to be completed by end of December 2023.   

5.    Applicability

5.1.     Existing AD Chart in the AIP Page VCBI AD 2-35 and other information related to upgrade of facilities will be updated in the AIP on the completion of the project.
