The main gateways of our country to the world functions under the purview of our ministry and I consider it a privilege to provide visions to it.
From the businessman to the leisure traveler, our Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake caters round the clock to a steady stream of passengers both inward and outward bound which includes that very important segment of our own citizens who toil overseas to earn valuable foreign exchange revenue for the country. The airport has grown from a low end regional airport to a fully-fledged International Airport employing over 3000 personnel and using state of the art airport technology.
For the past several years we have been operating well in excess of our passenger handling capacity. Our government under the distinguished leadership of His Excellency the President Maithripala Sirisena and Honourable Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has taken note that increasing the capacity of BIA is a top priority. Airport & Aviation Services is currently busy with the project formulation and preliminary design work for the development of BIA. Once this project is completed our airport will have adequate capacity for the efficient handling of passengers and cargo thus paving the way for rapid economic growth.
We also have plans to promote our second International Airport at Mattala and for the development of the domestic aviation network that would be a boon for tourism and for investment promotion. The aviation industry could indeed be the vital catalyst in national development.
We extend our invitation to the entire world to connect with us as users, business partners and investors.
Nimal Siripala de Silva M.P.
